Every industry has its version of “writer’s block”, and we’ve all suffered from the inability to get in the zone. These daily habits will dramatically increase your energy, creativity, and most importantly, your productivity.

We are human.

When studying, many students forget this. They confuse their brain with a computer. Your brain works differently from a computer.

Your brain is more than a computer. It is an advanced survival machine. It operates by different rules.

10 Easy Ways To Take Notes While Studying

You might want to use different note-taking methods for various situations and subjects that are great!

What matters most is that your notes help you understand and remember the information more easily

1. Keep a separate notebook and use color codes.

10 Easy Ways To Take Notes While Studying

The first tip isn’t directly related to writing notes, but it is to keep a separate notebook for all of your subjects just so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for, and if you prefer using folders or binders instead, then I would suggest maybe having the notes for one or two subjects in each binder.

Also, just keeping a separate notebook for questions and practice problems makes everything a lot more organized. Use color codes. My next tip is to color-code your notes based on the chapter or topic so that when you want to review your notes on a specific chapter, they’re easy to find in your notebook.

2. Learn how to Outline.

Outlining is a helpful way to break down complex ideas into logical, bite-sized points. It creates a well-organized and hierarchical structure.

As such, you can easily pick out the main ideas and supporting information. Outlining is one of the most popular note-taking methods for a reason. It’s easy to learn, and it works well for most subjects.

3. Make clear and accurate notes.

Make sure to take legible and accurate notes since it is not uncommon to forget key details discussed during class after it has ended. Frequently, students comprehend the teacher’s lecture and think they’ll remember everything, so they neglect to jot down specific details only to find later that they can’t recall what it was they needed to remember.

Students who keep accurate notes can review them later to review key points, recall necessary detail, solidify knowledge and study concepts they didn’t fully comprehend during the lecture.

Additionally, since teachers frequently cover many topics during their lectures, effective notes enable students to concentrate on specific topics that are most taught.

4. Come to class prepared.

Students properly prepared for class usually take better notes than those who come unprepared. Proper preparation includes completing assigned reading before class and reviewing notes from previous lectures.

Students who review their notes from previous lectures (1) will have a better context for learning new topics presented in the next lecture and (2) can ask questions about confusing concepts they didn’t quite understand from the previous lecture.

5. Compare your notes.

To ensure your notes are as accurate and detailed as possible, compare them with the notes of other students after class is over. How to Take Notes While Studying (So You Get Better Grades)

This is useful because your colleagues will frequently write down lecture details that you forgot or missed. This strategy will make classroom notes more thorough and precise.

6. Minimize distractions.

Effective note-takers avoid classroom distractions. This can include sitting in spots with fewer distractions and not signing up for classes with friends that you might want to talk with during lectures. How to Take Notes While Studying (So You Get Better Grades)

Some students will even sit in spots where it is difficult to constantly glance at the clock.

7. Overlook the PowerPoints

If your instructor has PowerPoint displays on the screen that are heavily text-based, you may want to avert your eyes. Human beings only have so much working memory. How to Take Notes While Studying (So You Get Better Grades)

They can only devote so much of that memory to both listening and seeing the world simultaneously. If you’re sitting in on a class and your lecturer is saying the same thing as what’s on the PowerPoint slide, then just don’t look at the PowerPoint.

Students who try to listen and read identical content at the same time end up remembering less because they strain themselves trying to process identical audio and visual information at the same time. How to Take Notes While Studying (So You Get Better Grades)

The most important thing is that your notes can be used for your revision later, and if you use a lot of abbreviations, it may be smart to write them down because you may not remember all of them when reviewing your notes a while later. So, just having a little glossary on a post-it note can be helpful.

9. Write down questions.

No matter how intelligent a student is, from time to time they’re bound to get confused and end up having questions unanswered by the lecture. For this reason, it is a good idea to write down questions to ask after class, or during subsequent lectures.

You can also answer your questions through a web search, a tutor, another student, or by using reference books–but only if you wrote down your questions in enough detail during the lecture. How to Take Notes While Studying (So You Get Better Grades)
